Why Kurt Rocks Our (Plaid) Socks Off

Mon Dec 05 2011, 9:35 AM
Glee’s third season is all about exciting beginnings and new characters, but the pilot is also marked with a tinge of sadness: this season, it is senior year for Kurt Hummel, Finn Hudson, and Rachel Berry. We all know what that means – graduation. And because Glee’s creator Ryan Murphy wants to keep the story running in real-time, it means that on the season finale, these 3 will also be rendering their – gasp – final song as Glee club members.

So instead of wallowing in sentimentality and regret, we’d like to move on, ahead of everyone else (being first is something we’re good at), and celebrate this stellar trio. They’ve all arguably made the biggest impacts on the show, and with good reason. We’ll start with the crowd favorite, the inimitable Mr. Kurt Hummel!

He’ll do anything for family

Kurt was willing to pretend to be straight – he even the football team at one point – just so he could protect his dad from hurtful neighbors. Luckily, Burt loved and accepted him, and encouraged Kurt to be just who he wants to be. It was also heartwarming to see Kurt so busy during his father’s wedding to Finn’s mom!

He’s a diehard romantic

Klaine fans watched with pride as Blaine won Kurt over, song by song. It was oddly satisfying to see Kurt, who went through quite some hurt and rejection, finally meet a guy whom he deserves. It’s just really cute to see Kurt so flustered about love!

He dressed the part

Kurt’s sense of style definitely justified his star status among Gleeks. His sartorial repertoire ran the gamut from a “Dolce and Gabbana” coat (from way back in Season 1’s pilot), to statement scarves, to a curious vest/bib hybrid in Season 3’s pilot. His unique get-ups are always worth talking about. Just like him!

He sang with his heart

Kurt’s specialty was doing his renditions of songs sung by female artists. He preferred the musical/jazz numbers, but he also brought out some seriously emotional performances during the sadder parts of his story. Whatever he belted out, Kurt’s solo performances always tugged at our heartstrings.

He learned to stand up for himself

Kurt’s bullying episode with Karofsky was one of Glee’s most shocking moments, but it ushered in a deeper development for Kurt’s character. He transferred schools to escape, but eventually, with the help of Blaine and the support of the Glee Club, he returned to McKinley to face his tormentor head on. Kurt then inspired so many young people around the world to be proud of who they are!

So what’s next for Kurt in his last year on Glee? Knowing this proud gal, he won’t be exiting without a bang. We hope that he (and Rachel) truly make it big in New York! And all who’s in favor of a Glee Spinoff for the graduates raise your hands (hope Ryan Murphy reads this)!
